It feels like I've been strained through somebody's bowels
![]() Say hello to the greatest RPG of all time. (this is not opinion) For those of you who like RPGs and haven't played this game: you haven't seen a real RPG yet. For those of you who don't like RPGs and haven't played this game: play it anyways. For those of you who know the greatness that is Planescape: Torment: good. Now go play it again. You know you want to. Planescape: Torment is an RPG developed by Blackisle Studios in 1999 and it kicks all ass. Taking place in the Planescape universe (a popular Tabletop Roleplaying setting), you play the character known only as "The Nameless One" an immortal who awakens in a mortuary, with amnesia. You meet up with a flying talking skull who - wait what? Flying talking skull!? Anyways, he helps you out, and he has quite the personality, spouting insults at foes and such. ![]() The gameplay is the most well refined D&D system I've seen in a CRPG really, you can go through the entire game only fighting a couple of times, because unlike most RPGs this game isn't about combat. While the combat system is fairly in-depth and intuitive, the game is more about its story. As you progress through a level of what we would call hell, to a brothel, to a pregnant alleyway, and more, you learn the lore of the world, and the laws of this new world and universe, that differ from our own. You learn to somehow feel for the characters, which is rather surprising. Somehow, the nameless main character provides the most interesting experience, because the experience of being an immortal and the way it is done in-game is unparalleled. As you go on in the game, you learn that there is a law of the Planescape world, known as consensus reality. What a majority believes to be true, is true. This allows for some interesting scenarios, where you can actually bring a person into existence who didn't exist before hand, simply by making a ton of people believe he exists. Back to the story. There is so much text in this game, but it's so well written. It's literally like reading the most interesting novel ever with graphics, iirc there is like enough text to fill up a volume of the Encyclopedia Britanica or something like that. The characters are all different, and weird in their own ways, but yet so in-depth and unique from any other characters in any other RPG ever. You are on a task to recover The Nameless One's memory. Wow, I know, it sounds straight out of some generic Final Fantasy character's quest, but it isn't. It's not even close. It's epic. There are a few central themes to the story, those being that of fate, torment, immortality...and it's done so beautifully. The story just flows, and even though they cut some stuff out of the game due to time constraints, you can't even tell. The game is now very rare and I doubt you'll find it very easily, but if you can pick it up. I swear to god, you will not want to put it down. I've probably played through it like eight times and it's still just as good as ever, since there is so many decisions and paths/factions and shit you can take. It's probably the best CRPG experience you will ever have, and nothing in my mind has ever come close to touching this game in its gaming experience. Posted on March 26, 2008
