Freeware Fridays #14: 4th of July Blow Out!
A man looms on the other side of the table, and places a briefcase on it. As his black pants adjust, he turns the briefcase around to face me. In his near monotone voice, he creepily speaks, "You will do an expanded Freeware Fridays, this day. To not do so, is unamerican, as you know..." He very well knew how to strike nerves in a true Americans heart, I felt a pain overtake me. Would I be so easily corrupted...? I open the briefcase, and spy upon the hundreds of green dollar bills that would provide for my life for some time. I nodded at the man, and protected my Americanism as I turned on the typewriter, and started to write....

Universal Sandbox:
By: Dan Dixon
Space Simulator

This game let's you screw up our universe. It owns. You can create 50 Earths, make them gravitate around each other, make them all explode, and watch what happens. Summon a black hole in the Milky Way. Blow up the Sun. Watch what happens when the Death Star blows up near Endor. Cause three galaxies to collide into each other.

You decide!

Balmung Cycle Part I: The Messenger and the Heretic:
By: The Magi
Role Playing Game

Wow, a game from so long ago finally gets released...

Balmung Cycle is a game by fellow member Magi, and it features a pretty okay (if leaving more to be desired) story with a duel system that isn't a glorified Rock Paper Scissors, a cool magic system, a system called Adrenaline, Hyper Attacks, and such. It's pretty fun and is enough to change up the DBS to not be so boring.

It's definitely a stand out game, and something you should at least check out! You can find more info at: http://www.gamingw.net/forums/index.php?topic=72903.0. Smile

Fury:
By: Auran
PvP MMO

This game now has free accounts, is a lot more stable, and isn't so shit. It's a really REALLY REALLY fast paced PvP MMORPG, but is pretty so-so. I'd only recommend you try it if you look and like it, or are really bored and looking for something a bit new.

You can download it here: www.unleashthefury.com

Combat Arms
By: Nexon
FPS

Combat Arms is a free to play online FPS with lots of gun customization, pretty good graphics, decent maps, good stability. It isn't as CRAZY as Wolf Team, it plays more like a cheaper Call of Duty 4, really, without the classes.

You will need a pretty good computer, and it's in Open Beta right now so stability is here or there, but it's good for a nice time waster.

You can download it here: http://combatarms.nexon.net/

Duotris
By: Binary Zoo
Arcade Puzzle Game

Duotris is a block puzzle game...with a twist! Power ups, surprises, online high scores and such abound.

The game is a really small file size, and like all of Binary Zoo's games is VERY trippy.

A must get if you even remotely like these kind of games: http://www.binaryzoo.com/games/duotris/index.htm

Guardians of Paradise
By: E. Hashimoto
Top Down Adventure RPG (ie: Zelda)

Guardians of Paradise is a freeware game that is highly like the old Legend of Zelda games for the NES/SNES/Gameboy. You have to try and find a cure for your sister's illness, and get elemental spirits to solve puzzles and help you out. It's pretty cool and complete, feels like a full package.

ROM Check Fail
By: Farbs
No clue.

From the site:
Quote
Carefully place a dozen arcade classics in a large mixing bowl. Add a dash of awesomesauce, cover the bowl, and allow the ingredients to ferment over three weeks. Uncover in a well ventilated area, then mash until loud and glitchy. Serve over the internet.

Check it out at: http://www.farbs.org/games.html (also has other games!!)

The BM Spot

Hey Champs. Welcome to the BM spot, where I overrule everything HL just told you in favour of some ACTUALLY GOOD GAMES. (I'm kidding, but really... That HL wouldn't know a good game if it hit him in the face.)

Within a Deep Forest
This game is THE BOSS. It's a little dated now so I'm sure a lot of you have probably played it already, but fuck is it GOOD OLD FUN.  The premise of the game was basically based around the concept of ball physics. You are many different types of ball material and you bounce around the world finding new ball materials to get to new areas. An Explorational platformer with a twist I guess. (The twist being that you are a ball.)

I got a little fanatical about this game after a while and started challenging myself. Those of you who have played, will know of the dreaded Glass ball. The most hated ball of most but actually my favourite ball, and I became so obsessed over the challenge I actually completed the game using nothing but the glass ball, save for the few times when other balls are absolutely required. This involved glitching the game to abuse a bug where the glass ball wouldn't break when coming off the complete outer or inner pixel of a corner and was MAD HARD.

IN CONCLUSION this is a fun game. It is frustrating at times and has some ridiculous levels (a cheese factory for one) but the atmosphere created by the slow paced exploration and ambient chill-out music from Nifflas/Xerxes/Dfast and other popular tracker artists, really creates a great GAME MOOD. If you are a casual gamer content with taking the game with ease then it's perfectly possible, and if like me you end up spending HOURS OF YOUR LIFE on the same jump with the glass ball for no reason other than challenge then that option is there too. For those of you interested I will also mention that upon completion the "Speedrun Mode" is unlocked, but I am not good at things like that so I passed it up myself. Enjoy.

Automation
What would this article be like if I didn't at least try and pawn off ONE adventure game onto you. (Maybe two, maybe the rest of the article is adventure games. Snap.) Automation is a simple game about a scientist who drops his robot specimin down a crack in the floor and has to retrieve it. It has some pretty clever puzzles that will require you to actually think and SOLVE what's going on. (Maybe also get frustrated and quit.) It has a really nice atmosphere put together by Mr.Colossal with ambient bioshock-esque pixel based graphics.

As short as the game is, (ie you can complete it in maybe 20 minutes) it is solidly put together and plays like a charm with some really classic adventure game puzzles like FINDING THINGS TO PUT IN HOLES and USE MAGNET TO TRANSFER ROBOT OVER WATER. The game only takes place in one room, but unlike most adventure games it's a sidescroller and gives you a lot of room to move around and really explore this intricately put together room. Big recommend from me, check this shit out.

I Wanna be the Guy
I'd like to consider that Freeware Friday's would be kind enough to review games objectively sometimes. That, although as a showcase for COOL GAME TO PLAY we would also review some shit games in our offhand two sentence manner and say DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME EVER. Well I'll go ahead and do that right now: This game is SICK AS HELL and not in the good way. I mean this is the game that will make a full grown man shoot himself in the face in frustration. (Or make me do it anyway because I am TOO DUMB TO JUST SWITCH IT OFF.)

I don't know what was going through the mind of the guy who created this game. Make the most impossible game ever, make the game that will piss off the most people ever. Whatever I guess he succeeded because this ridiculous ANTI-VIDEOGAME-VIDEOGAME from backwards land is like every game ever parodied through nightmare mode. Jesus.

If you are considering playing this game LET ME WARN YOU that you will probably not make it past the first screen before you GET FED UP and quit. Every last thing in this game is against you, apples on trees will kill you, things will appear out of nowhere to kill you, you will die for no reason, everything is a monster and the walls will come alive to eat you if you stop for JUST ONE SECOND. This game is for sick people. Don't play it. (Or do play it because you are the kind of guy who thinks WHOA, A GAMING CHALLENGE. But you wont make it very far I bet.)

I take the briefcase, stand up, and start to walk towards the door. The man stood up as well, and shook my hand.

With my job finished, and my Americanism secured, I gave the man one last shake, and told him goodbye...
