What is Catch Captain Goodluck?

The original Catch Captain Goodluck took place during the holiday season of 2006, and the contest is named for an account that I post from named Ranch "Fat Free" Blessing. There was a second contest in 2007, and I put it on hiatus in 2008 because of my Iraq deployment, so this is the third year.

Anyway, this account goes around and posts things that, when I read back on them, strike me as fairly neutral, even banal. The content of the posts aren't the point. See:

Well, New Year's Eve was a very interesting day.  I woke up at about 10PM on the 30th.  Since the weekend dragged on longer than two days, I was able to sleep, and sleep, and sleep.  It's a curse, though!  I decided that I was going to stay up until midnight.  I went over to a friend's house and we drank mudslides and played some Rock Band (I think we cleared the Hall of Fame on Medium) and we played word games until about 11:55.  At that point, someone told me that "hey, we've got about five minutes, I totally forgot," and we prepared shots to toast the new year.  I think I stayed up until about 2AM and then went to sleep.

I didn't have a hangover when I woke up, though.  A hangover is typically characterized as head pain and nausea.  No.  I woke up and my nose hurt for some reason.  I have no idea why, and it's gone now, but it was kind of weird.  Anyway, Happy New Year!

What really matters is that part at the bottom. There's a spoilered phrase that I post at the bottom of each Captain Goodluck post when I'm operating the account. Your job is to bring that phrase back to this topic, and to be one of the first three people to post it. Let me stress bringing it back to this topic, because we've had a few people over the years who actually reply to the topic that Captain Goodluck posted in with the phrase. That doesn't get you anything.

Getting Points: The old "OldStyle" "TrickStyle" way

So, you bring back a phrase and what do you get? Well, the first poster gets three points, the second gets two points, and the third gets one point. The poster with the most points by the time the contest is called wins a prize.

Getting Points: New Members

Any member that joins during the contest gets five points automatically. Post in this topic to claim your points and be placed on the leaderboard.

Getting Points: Referrals

Also, as a new feature, someone who brings one of their friends to the forums and gets them to post in this topic from contest start to December 17 gets three points per referral. Here's the catch, though. We're looking for new members all the time to expand our membership, and it's no good if they just leave after helping you win your precious indie games. Therefore, if you refer a member here, here's what needs to happen to get the referrer the points:

• The "Last Active" time in their profile has to be December 17th or later. This means that, since the contest closes Christmas Eve, they have to have been active sometime after December 17.
• They must make at least one post.

The person referred can participate all they want. The new member rule applies here and they automatically get five points once they declare themselves in this topic. I don't even care if a new member joins and refers another new member. I'll give the referrer three points on top of their new member bonus.

What I detest is someone making fake accounts to collect points. If you plan on doing that, please crawl back into your fucking tar pit.

I'll probably need to do some sort of verification to make sure some asshole doesn't make eight joke accounts and sweep the contest. This part exists to grow our membership and it's going to fucking suck for you if I find out you rigged yourself to one of the top three spots. Referral points will be credited Christmas Eve night pending verification that your referrals are actual people and not imaginary ones.

Points will be finalized sometime Christmas Eve night, so if you win, you'll have a nice Christmas or Boxing Day surprise in your PM inbox. You don't have to be present to win, so don't feel like it's necessary to stick around if you have other things to do.

Prizes

What are the prizes this time? Well, they used to be premium accounts and t-shirts, but premium is pretty oversaturated. I can give away Gaming World t-shirts and most of the proceeds would go to GW, but I don't know if that would be a good prize draw.

I think that I'll just give away some indie games. If you win and you want premium or a t-shirt, I'll hand those over instead. I heavily doubt it, though, so:

Grand, Second and Third Prize: $30 in indie games

This means if you want to buy thirty little time-wasters on the iTunes App Store for a dollar each, point them out, and I will buy them and gift them to you. If you just want Noitu Love 2 or Immortal Defense or Hammerfight because you didn't have the money when they came out, I'll grab those for you, too. I was originally going to buy only one indie game, but that seems to tip the scales toward the more expensive games since you can only buy one and you don't want to waste the credit.

The Captain's Posting Schedule

Starting November 27, I'll try to post once a day at a random time. We have a very diverse membership here from all parts of the world and it would be unfair if they had to consistently stay up during their sleep time in order to have a fighting chance at placing in the top three. I'll stop posting from the Captain Goodluck account on December 24th so I can tally the points and verify the referrals.

Misc.

• Contest Entry Cutoff is December 17. You have to be a GW member by December 17 in order to participate.
• Prizes are not subject to returns.
• At the time of this post, $30 equals £18, €20, AUD $32 and CAD $32. Exchange rates will be updated at contest close. I am only using currency besides the US dollar if a game that a winner requests is not available through a game service or other portal that accepts US currency.
• In the event of a tie, we will break it with a number guess. I will give my number to a neutral proxy before we start to ensure that it's fair.
• I haven't considered what the punishment should be if someone fake accounts their way to victory, but I'd like it to be a fucking banning, because that's a huge abuse of people's trust to be doing that shit.
• Posts Captain Goodluck make in this topic don't count.
